Terms

The rules, kept short.

Raindrop works because the people on it are who they say they are and mean what they post. These are the terms every member agrees to when they sign in.

The short version

  • Be who you say you are, and post only what is real.
  • Use Raindrop to find people, work, research, and resources. No scraping, no harassment, no selling to members.
  • An employer with an export-controlled role states that requirement and handles it in its own hiring.
  • RAIN may remove content or accounts that break these terms.
  • Raindrop is offered as it is, with no warranty.
01

Who can use Raindrop

Raindrop is open to people with a UC San Diego email address. Investors, founders, industry people, and alumni from outside UC San Diego can ask to join as partners, and the RAIN board confirms each partner account before it opens. Others join by invitation or with an access code from RAIN.

One person, one account. Keep your sign-in to yourself, and tell RAIN if you think someone else has used it. RAIN runs Raindrop and these terms are an agreement between you and RAIN.

02

Honest profiles and postings

  • Use your real name, your real role, and your real affiliation. Claim membership only in orgs you belong to.
  • Describe your skills and your work as they are. Matching is only as good as what people tell it.
  • Post only needs and offers that are real and that you have the standing to post. Say plainly whether a role is paid, unpaid, for credit, or for equity.
  • Do not pretend to be someone else, and do not post on behalf of a lab, an org, or a company without its say.
03

Acceptable use

Raindrop is for finding people, work, research, mentorship, funding, and resources around UC San Diego. While you are here:

  • No scraping. Do not collect profiles, postings, or contacts in bulk, by script or by hand, and do not build lists or datasets out of what you see here.
  • No harassment. No threats, no hate, no unwanted advances, and no contacting someone again after they have said no.
  • No solicitation. Do not use messages or postings to sell products or services to members, to run promotions, or to recruit for anything unrelated to the posting you made.
  • No misuse of contact details. Contact details you see after connecting are for that relationship. Do not pass them on or add them to a mailing list.
  • No getting around the rules. Do not probe, bypass, or overload the access controls, and do not use another member's account.
  • Nothing unlawful. Do not post anything illegal, anything that infringes someone else's rights, or anything confidential that is not yours to share.

University policies, including the student conduct code, still apply to what members do here.

04

Postings and applications

Whoever posts a need or an offer is responsible for it: that it is accurate, that it follows the law and university policy on hiring, pay, and course credit, and that it comes down when it is filled.

RAIN does not employ the people hired through Raindrop, does not vet every posting, and is not a party to any arrangement members make with each other. What an applicant shares with a poster is for deciding on that application and for nothing else.

05

Export-controlled roles

Some roles carry export-control or citizenship requirements. The employer states any such requirement in its posting and administers it in its own hiring process.

Raindrop has no citizenship or nationality filters, and it does not collect that information from anyone.

06

Industry partners

Partners and investors are confirmed by RAIN. A partner sees faculty, staff, other confirmed partners and investors, the students who apply to its postings, and the students who opted in to its talent pool, and nobody else.

A partner may use what it sees for its own recruiting and campus work, may not contact students outside those two groups through Raindrop, and may not export student information beyond what its hiring process needs.

07

What you post stays yours

You keep the rights to what you post. You give RAIN permission to store it and to show it inside Raindrop to the people your settings allow, which is what makes the network work.

You are responsible for having the right to post it. How your information is handled is set out in the privacy policy.

08

Ask Raindrop

Ask Raindrop is a shortcut, and you never have to use it. It answers from what it can find on Raindrop with your permissions, and it can still be incomplete or wrong. Open the card and check before you rely on an answer.

There is a daily limit on questions. Do not use Ask Raindrop to pull information out of Raindrop in bulk.

09

Research data

The research data pages are a catalog. The datasets stay with their labs, and the lab that owns a dataset decides who gets access and on what terms.

If a lab grants you access, its license and conditions govern what you may do with the data.

10

What RAIN may remove

RAIN may edit or remove a profile, a posting, a message, or an event, and may suspend or close an account, when it breaks these terms or when the board judges it harmful to members or to the network.

Tell RAIN about anything that looks wrong, with the report option on the page or by writing to rain@ucsd.edu. If you think RAIN got a decision wrong, write to the same address and a board member will look at it again.

11

No warranty

Raindrop is offered as it is. RAIN does not promise that it will always be available, that a match will work out, that a posting or a profile is accurate, or that using it will lead to a position, funding, or an introduction.

What members arrange with each other is between them. As far as the law allows, RAIN is not liable for losses that come from using Raindrop or from dealings between members.

12

Changes and contact

RAIN may update these terms. When a change matters, RAIN will say so inside Raindrop, and the date at the top always shows the latest version. Using Raindrop after a change means you accept it.
